Mindful Decluttering for a Calmer Summer

Home interior with garments on racks

Summer can often feel quite busy: some with children at home, holidays to plan, longer days, and perhaps the feeling that we should be doing more.

But what if this season could also be a gentle invitation to create more space?

I’ve learned a lot about this from my sister, who is the “Marie Kondo” of our family. Whenever I feel stuck, she helps me return to that famous question: “Does this spark joy?”

Most of the time, my mind already knows the answer. But having a hand to hold, or simply a little encouragement, makes all the difference.

She usually helps me with my wardrobe, going through clothes together, piece by piece. Afterwards, we donate what’s no longer needed with gratitude. Sometimes she “inherits” a few pieces if she loves something from my donation pile.

These sessions are often full of laughter, gratitude, and the joy of letting go. They become opportunities not only to clear space, but also to catch up and share memories.

This is the spirit I invite you to bring into your own mindful decluttering this summer: not a duty, but a chance to set a kind intention for your space.

It doesn’t need to be the whole house. It can be a drawer, a corner, or a single bag of things. Small steps towards an energising space.

🌿 Mindful decluttering in practice

When we think of decluttering, it’s easy to imagine huge projects: emptying entire rooms, garages, or lofts. But it doesn’t need to be overwhelming.

In fact, the most sustainable change often comes from starting small and doing it with kindness.

Here are a few gentle ways to begin:

  1. Choose one spot. A drawer, a shelf, a bag, or a corner. Keep it realistic and light.

  2. Set a gentle intention first. Take a moment to breathe and ask yourself: What do I hope to create by doing this? Perhaps calm, clarity, or a sense of lightness.

  3. Pick up each item with awareness. Notice how it feels in your hands. Ask yourself: Does this support me now? Does it bring me joy or ease?

  4. Release with gratitude. If you decide to let something go, take a moment to thank it for serving its purpose. Donate, pass it on, or recycle, knowing you are creating space for what supports you now.

Decluttering doesn’t just clear physical space. It can create a little more mental space too. When our surroundings feel lighter, our minds often do as well.

Reflection to carry with you:

What kind of space would feel energising and supportive for me this summer?

And because our spaces are not only physical, you might also explore a small digital declutter.

📱 Experiment: A mini digital detox

Think of this as travelling back to the 80s or 90s, before smartphones ruled our pockets. There’s no competition here, just curiosity.

Tiny steps to gently try:

  • Phone-free breakfasts. Start the day with presence, not pings.

  • Screen-free meals with family. Notice the difference in conversation.

  • One evening a week without scrolling. Replace it with music, reading, a walk, or simply doing less.

  • If you feel "brave": Try a whole afternoon or day off social media. Let people know how to reach you in an emergency, then give yourself permission to enjoy being offline.

Notice what happens. How does it feel in your body? In your mood? In your connections?

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about giving yourself moments of freedom and presence.

🌿 Creating space, one small step at a time

As I write this, I’m thinking about how creating space is not only something we do in our homes.

Sometimes we also need space to listen to ourselves. Space to notice what we need. Space to return to what matters, gently and without pressure.

This is also the kind of space I offer in my coaching work: a steady, compassionate place to pause, reflect and reconnect with yourself.

🗓️ If you’ve been longing for that kind of support, I’ve recently reopened space in my calendar and you are welcome to get in touch.

For today, you might simply begin with one small act of mindful decluttering: a drawer, a corner, a digital habit, or a few breaths before the next thing.

✨ May this summer bring you space, ease, and moments of joy.
